Happy LONG weekend! I hope you get some much-needed rest and relaxation. This week in reading, we will be looking into the genre of DRAMA. I'm excited about seeing the students' acting chops. :) We will be finding the theme of each drama we read. We will also be looking for homophones. Because of the short week, we will not test this week. Tuesday, Mrs. Mosley will conduct a lesson about an app called MyOn with all reading classes in the library. Therefore, we will spend Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday on the above skills. The test will be the following Monday, the 27th. Please check out the links below for extra practice!

Hey there parents and students! We have a lot to cover/review, so I'll jump right in to our skills for this upcoming week. We will once again be concentrating on biographies. My hope is that the lives of others will inspire the kids to always pursue their dreams...no matter how big! We will also still focus on identifying the author's perspective. Our new skill this week is one that I am so excited about...idioms! Lots of fun YouTube videos about that skill, so I encourage you to go explore! Some of my favorites are included in the "helpful links" section below. Because we are still focusing on author's perspective, I did not include any new videos for that. Please see last week's blog post to visit links for that skill. :)

Students tested on nonfiction text structures today, and I was very pleased with the results. :) Now, it's time to look ahead to next week. We will be reading expository texts focusing on natural disasters, like flooding and dust storms. Within those texts, students will use paragraph clues to determine the meaning of unknown words. They will also have to decide if the authors are writing from a neutral/objective standpoint by giving us just the facts, or if the authors are writing from a biased point of view by including their own opinions in their writings. We will test these skills on Friday. Check out the helpful links below for extra practice. ***On February 28th, 6th grade will be taking a field trip to the Birmingham Civil Rights Museum. If you haven't received your permission form yet, you will by the first of the week. The cost will be $20.00. Guess what week it is...REVIEW WEEK! :) That means no Wonders test! This week in class, we will be focusing on the four non-fiction text structures: compare/contrast, cause/effect, problem/solution, and sequence. Not only will we be identifying them, we will learn how to best comprehend the information presented. PLUS...even though there will not be a Wonders test, we will have a paper-pencil exam on the four text structures on Friday. I'm excited for a week of learning with you! In ALL language classes this week, students will be completing a biography project/persuasive essay. Be looking for more info on this at the first of the week. Finally, check out the "Upcoming Events" tab for important January dates. As always, thanks for visiting! :) ~ Mrs. Lee Hey everyone! Hope you got to sleep in and rest on this gloomy, stormy Saturday. :) This week in class, students will be reading some expository texts centering around the environment and keeping our world clean. Within each text, students will be working to identify the main idea as well as some key details that support that main idea. Students will also be looking for synonyms and antonyms within each text. Students, I encourage to think back to past context clue lessons. If you do not know a word in the passage we are reading, check for context clues. Sometimes, an author will give you a synonym or antonym to help you define the unknown word. I hope you will check out the helpful links tab for fun videos and extra practice.

This upcoming week in reading, we will be diving into some biographies. I love this genre, and I hope y'all will as well! We'll also be reviewing how to summarize a text and how to use paragraph clues. Our new skill is Cause and Effect. There are some awesome (and fun!) resources on cause and effect in the helpful links section today. PLEASE take advantage of those. :) ***I stopped posting language updates here because I only have 24 students in my language class. It's almost time to get back into the swing of things, so I wanted to go ahead and tell you about our upcoming skills. We will go ahead and begin a new Wonders week the day that students return; however, we will not test on those skills until the following Thursday. So, for the next couple weeks, we will be concentrating on sequencing, summarizing, prefixes, and suffixes. Some of these skills we have utilized before, but this is the first time we will be taking an in-depth look at summarizing. I'm excited about some of our classroom activities, so I hope you guys will love them as much as I do!
If your child is in my language class, we will just be reviewing older skills for those first days back in class. On Monday, we will begin looking at linking verbs, predicate nouns, and predicate adjectives. I know the kids are so ready. Next week, we will take some time off from the Wonders series to complete a book study on The Best Christmas Pageant Ever! We will be taking some quizzes on the chapters of that book, so those will act as test grades for the week. We will also use the text to practice past skills such as theme, context clues, and sequencing.
If your child is in my language class, we will continue to discuss helping verbs, verb phrases, progressive tense verbs, and perfect tense verbs. The test on those will be Thursday. We will also have new spelling words, which are listed below. ****PLEASE READ!!!! We WILL be having an early dismissal on Friday, December 16th. Buses will dismiss at 10:30. Next week, we will take a week off to read The Best Christmas Pageant Ever!
This week's blog post will look a little different. Our two main skills this week are the same as last week's skills: theme and context clues. Therefore, I won't be adding any new helpful links on those skills. Feel free to look back to last week's post and revisit those links. The only additional skill for reading this week will be the introduction of third person limited point of view. I found an AWESOME website with a very helpful video, which I will link below. If your child is in my language class, we will be studying the following: helping verbs, verb phrases, progressive tense verbs, and perfect tense verbs. Because there so much packed into this week, we WILL NOT be having a grammar test this upcoming Friday. We will take two weeks to thoroughly cover those skills.
