Happy Hallow's Eve weekend, and Happy Homecoming to my JSU Gamecocks! I'm very thankful for this restful weekend. This upcoming week is our last full week before Thanksgiving Break (see upcoming events tab)! So, let's discuss our focus skills. Last week, students read stories told from a first person point of view; this week, we are moving to the third person point of view. Narrators of stories written in third person POV act as outsiders looking in. Pronoun clues to look for in those stories are he, him, she, his, her, hers, they, them, and their. Our second focus skill for the week is Greek and Latin suffixes. The key idea for students to understand is that when you add a suffix, the meaning of the root word can completely change.
Spelling Words: brutal, secure, panic, cabin, fever, voter, vanish, nylon, detect, resist, labor, focus, rival, recite, topic, amid, unit, rotate, vital, lament Vocabulary Words benefit - an advantage deftly - done in a skillful, quick, and clever way derision - ridicule or lack of respect eaves - the lower overhanging edges of a roof expertise - having mastered a skill impudence - behavior that is bold, rude, and disrespectful legacy - something handed down from the past symmetry - beauty and balance in shape and appearance Helpful Links: The Apostrophe Trick - FANTASTIC VIDEO! HAPPY FALL BREAK!! I am so thankful for this time to relax and recharge. I wanted to go ahead and give everyone a heads-up on the skills for next week. In reading class, I will be introducing point-of-view; we will only be covering first person. We will also be discussing connotation and denotation. I think the kids will have a lot of fun with that skill. In language, we will continue learning about plural nouns, but we will also be learning about collective nouns. Check out the helpful links section below for some good video resources and games.

YAY! I think everyone is in need of a little R&R. Next week is Red Ribbon Week, so SMS will be participating in dress-up days. Monday is "Wear red from your head to your toes. We'll take the pledge to say no." So, students need to wear all the red that they can. A full list of days will be coming home on the newsletter Monday. This week in reading, we will be focusing on the nonfiction text structure of compare and contrast. We will also identify the meanings of words using their Greek and Latin prefixes. In language, we will focus on singular and plural nouns. Spelling words will contain inflectional endings. I cannot believe we have entered October already; the first nine weeks is almost over! This week was a review week, so the students and I had a great time with some fun lessons. One of the activities the students completed this week involved making character selfies for some familiar fictional characters. Check out some of their selfies in the slideshow below! This week we will once again revisit root words, this time with Latin origins. We will also be focusing on finding problems and solutions within expository texts. If your child is in my language class, we will be discussing four different types of nouns: concrete, abstract, common, and proper. Here are some helpful videos and games.
