Hi there, parents and students! This past week has flown by! This week, we will be reviewing some previous skills and also adding some brand new skills. For review, the comprehension strategy is once again visualization. I can't stress the importance of this skill enough. I tried to encourage the students to put everything out of their minds and let stories play out like a movie. Please try to reiterate this at home as well. We will also still be using context clues to discover the meanings of words and phrases. The main skill that we will be adding this upcoming week is sequencing. We will be applying that skill to three story elements: character, setting, and plot. Both of our Wonders stories this week are historical fiction, so we will be discussing that genre in detail. If your child is in my language class, we will be identifying the complete subject/predicate and the simple subject/predicate of sentences. Our spelling words this week all contain a long vowel sound. Spelling Words: slope, acute, remote, bathe, gaze, rhyme, keen, tile, fuse, bleach, loan, tote, foal, foe, coax, bleak, continue, pave, meek, shrine Vocab Words adversity - a condition of misfortune that is often out of a person's control alliance - exists when people or groups have come together to achieve a common goal confinement - a way to keep someone or something from moving about freely inflicted - causes injury or harm reminisce - to remember and talk about something that happened in the past retrieved - when a lost item is found smuggle - to bring an object in or take it out secretly or without permission spindly - something that is tall, thin, and weak Helpful, printable resources and links YouTube Video on Sequencing As always, thanks for visiting. :)

Hi, parents and students! What a wonderful first few weeks we've had together. My students have been hard at work reviewing different genres and learning how to question and analyze when reading text. It's going to be a great year! This upcoming week, we will begin using our Wonders textbooks during reading class. We have several skills that we will be covering. First of all, our comprehension strategy is visualization, where readers picture what is happening in their minds as they read. This strategy is vital for comprehension, so please encourage students to read slowly, wonder, and question as they read. Students will also be asked to compare and contrast the characters, settings, and plots of two different stories. Furthermore, I will be introducing the use of context clues to determine the meaning of words and phrases within a story. We will be working hard on these skills Monday through Wednesday, and those skills will be tested on Thursday. If I am your child's language arts teacher, we will be continuing to compose different types of sentences and learning how to spice up our writing with descriptive words and strong openings that will hook our readers. Spelling words, vocabulary words, and sentence types will also be tested on Thursday. Vocabulary Words consolation - something that provides comfort or relief during a time of loss or grief glimmer - a subtle or faint sign or idea heinous - shockingly bad indispensable - absolutely necessary or essential perception - the way you think about a situation or issue phobic - have a fear of something sarcastic - using sharp or ironic words to insult or hurt someone Spelling words: gram, clash, dense, dread, prank, strict, drill, swan, prod, shrunk, scuff, clutch, threat, dwell, fund, text, rank, brink, mock, plaid Please feel free to use the links below for help at home. Also, keep encouraging your children to read, read, read! Lastly, visit the upcoming events tab to see what's happening at SMS.
