Mrs. Lee's Literacy Lovers
- C. S. Lewis
Friends, I can't believe how quickly we have made it to this point. The year seemed to fly by! These last few weeks will be filled with "End of the Year" ceremonies and activities; therefore, schedules will be flexible. On the days when classes meet, we'll be completing some interactive journal entries on character analysis, tone, and mood. These lessons will be based around art and interesting short stories that I think the students will love! We are officially done with reading tests (YAY!!!), but we will still have a couple of classwork grades before the end of the year. With all of that being said, this will be my final post of the school year. Parents, thank you for sharing your children with me each day. I think they've taught me more than I've taught them. And kiddos, if you are reading this, please know that just as any student I've had before, you will always hold a special place in my heart. I have some final pieces of advice for you as you move into 7th grade and the rest of your life. Please be kind. Remember that words/actions can have a lasting impact. You can apologize, but you can never fully take something back once its been said or done. Also, remember to BELIEVE IN YOURSELF. I've watched so many of you not complete assignments, lay your heads down in defeat, sigh in frustration, and the list goes on. So. Change your mindset. Change the question you ask yourself. Say THIS: Finally, always remember that your teachers love you, and we're rooting for you...even when it may not seem like it.
As always, thanks for visiting! Happy last days of 6th grade! :) ~ Mrs. Lee

Three more weeks, friends! WooHoo! We have a fun, but busy, week coming up in reading class. On Monday, Mr. Lindell from the ASAP program will be speaking to all my reading classes on the importance of staying substance-abuse free. On Tuesday, we will be doing a very fun (surprise) lesson with Mrs. Mosley in the library. Wednesday is really when we will begin talking about reading skills. I know that doesn't seem like much time for a test on Friday, but the skills we are covering have been covered time and time again this year. Our two big skills will be cause & effect and context clues. Cause and Effect was our skill last week as well; therefore, visit last week's post for helpful videos. I will still include some "context clues" links at the bottom so you can practice at home. Also, AR goals are due by Friday, May 12th. Some students haven't even taken a test this nine weeks. This is such an easy way for students to earn bonus, so please encourage them to take advantage of that opportunity.

This year has flown by. We need your help! Please help us encourage students to STAY MOTIVATED these last few weeks. It is crucial that their grades do not drop here at the very end of the year. We want them to finish strong!
We will finally be back to a somewhat normal routine this week. We will be discussing the genre of historical fiction. We will be focusing on the skill of cause and effect. We will also be identifying/defining proverbs and adages within the stories that we read. I've included some helpful links below: Helpful Links: IXL.com: Cause and Effect (LLL.4) and Adages & Proverbs (GGG.1-GGG.4) Examples of Proverbs in Disney movies 5 minute Proverbs & Adages Lesson Cause and Effect Quiz Disney Short Films playlist - find the causes and effects within the films :) 5 minute Cause and Effect Lesson Be sure to check out the Upcoming Events tab for the FINAL EVENTS OF THE YEAR!!! And as always, thanks for visiting. :) ~ Mrs. Lee Happy Saturday, friends! Hope you all are having a nice, relaxing weekend. This upcoming week will be a little bit different. On Monday, students will be going on a field trip to Oxford Lake for their ASPIRE testing reward. Please remind them to bring sunscreen, a hat and/or sunglasses, water, and any sports equipment/board games they would like to play with while we're there. Then on Friday, teachers have a professional development day. Students will not attend school. Due to all these events, we are going to continue our study of myths by watching Hercules! Students will have to fill out information as they go, so this will still be taken as a classwork grade, I'm excited to share this fun movie with them! As always, thanks for visiting! :)
~ Mrs. Lee :) P.S. As of Wednesday, we are ONE MONTH away from the last day of school! YAY! Hey there, friends! We survived testing week! Woo! I'm glad that's over. Now, let's get back to learning. I am SO excited about the genre we will be focusing on next week: myths. We have some fun activities coming up that center around that genre. Our comprehension skill for the week is the text structure of problem and solution. We've discussed this multiple times in class, so I feel confident that the students will flourish. Our final strategy is word origins, discovering how frequently used words received their meanings. I had some trouble finding age-appropriate links for myths and word origins, so my "helpful links" list is a little shorter than normal. Still, check it out before you go!

Spring Break has almost come to a close. I hope you all have enjoyed some rest and relaxation this week. I know I have. The next two weeks are going to be very different due to the ASPIRE testing schedule. We will be displaced to the gym for a few days this upcoming week while 7th and 8th grade test. On the days that we are in the building, we will be completing mock ASPIRE tests. I also have a few fun review games up my sleeve. :) 6th grade will begin testing not this week but next, the 11th-13th. In preparation for those tests, be sure to go to bed on time, eat a good breakfast, be on time for school, and wear comfy clothes.
Regular blog posts, helpful links included, will continue at the conclusion of testing. We will pick back up with the Wonders series and skills in several weeks. Until then, please check out the Upcoming Events tab to see what's happening in April. As always, thanks for visiting! :) ~ Mrs. Lee HAPPY WEEK BEFORE SPRING BREAK! YAY! We have a very busy (and short) week ahead of us. As you all know, we have only a few short weeks until the ASPIRE test. On the days that we are in the classroom this week, I'll be discussing test-taking tips and strategies with the kids. Here is what our week will look like.
Monday: Students will look at their latest STAR reading scores and set a realistic goal for their last attempt, which will be in a month or so. Then, we will discuss various test-taking strategies to prepare for the ASPIRE. Tuesday: Civil Rights Museum field trip! We will be out of the classroom. Wednesday-Thursday: Students will put the test-taking strategies discussed Monday to use. I will give the students a piece of text with both multiple-choice and open-ended questions to answer once they've read it. I will give them 30 minutes of class to read and answer as many questions as they can. We will do this just like the ASPIRE, so I will have dividers set up, and I won't be giving them any help to find or compose answers. For the last 20 minutes of class, we will discuss the correct answers as well as compose open-ended responses together. Friday: E-Day! Students will complete an assignment for me at home. They will be given this assignment no later than Wednesday. If you would like a few helpful test-taking videos, click the links below! THIS TEST DOES NOT DEFINE YOU - Very powerful; please watch! We are finally back on track to start studying new skills at the beginning of the week. Yay! This week in reading, we will once again concentrate on the genre of free-verse, but this time, it will be free-verse poetry! All examples of poetry this week will be written in the first person point of view. We will be discussing how we know that the poems are first person as well as what we find out about our narrators because of that point of view. Lastly, we will be looking for three examples of figurative language within the poems: idioms, alliteration, and assonance. Be sure to check out the (hilarious) review videos included below. I think they will be really helpful. I'm also including several links to IXL practice of these skills. I hope y'all have a wonderful weekend!

I'm reporting from my recliner again, but this time, I'm completely well! Praise the Lord! :) I just wanted to provide a quick update on our schedule for the remainder of this week and next week. Tomorrow, we will begin exploring new skills and a new genre. Even though our genre is realistic fiction -which the kids are familiar with, it will be written in the style of free verse. For more information on exactly what that means, check out the video I've included in the helpful links below. We will still focus on theme, but our second skill for the week will be homographs. We will test on these skills next Thursday, March 9. Next Friday, we will be doing something fun with Disney and Pixar animated short films. :)
Because theme was our main skill last week, I didn't include any new helpful links on theme. Please visit my next to last blog post to find review videos and links for theme. To say that last week did not go according to plan would be the understatement of the year. I'm currently on Day 3 of sickness/being quarantined to my recliner, so I missed the last few days of this week. Add that in with the Thursday basketball game at JSU, and it's safe to say that my reading classes are a little behind on instruction. We will not test on the skills we started last week until this Wednesday, March 1st. I want the kids to have plenty of time to be comfortable with what we are learning. Please refer to last week's blog for helpful links. And check back mid-week for a list of our new skills and new links for extra practice. Thank you for your support and patience, and as always, thanks for visiting. :) ~ Mrs. Lee
